課程概述

Unlike what is normally expected in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms where students “learn to use English,” this course is designed to help and guide students to “use English to learn,” in their development of the four integrated* skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In other words, the focus of this course is not only on the product but also on the process of learning. Students are thus expected to take full responsibility for their own learning and to take an active role in class, through a variety of exercises/activities which would provide them with opportunities for individual reflection, pair/small-group work, as well as outside-of-class assignments. The themes/topics chosen for class materials are kept to be up-to-date, varied, and yet interesting enough for students to get and feel personally involved in making meaning. Teacher-prepared course packet will be used mainly for reading and writing purposes; and Listen Up, for listening and speaking.
*It should be noted that the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing can not really be separated. The increase in one will positively affect and interact with the others to produce a corresponding increase in overall language ability

課程目標
Using English to learn, How?
This is the method called “learning by doing”. You use English to learn English by doing presentations, by looking up the new words in an English-English dictionary, by searching for the main idea, by coming up with questions, and the like. The more you do, the more you learn. The more you read, the better you can write. The more you listen, the more able you are to speak. That’s the idea.
課程要求
1. You are urged to exercise self-discipline and live by a study schedule once you join us here at NTU because, in college, no one forces you to do anything.
2. Due to the process-oriented nature of the course, those who do the preview before class, attend the class dutifully as scheduled, and who are willing to participate fully in class activities and discussions will benefit most from taking such a course.
3. The instructor will finish the first chapter of Animal Farm. From Chapters 2 to 10, students will form groups and go on stage to present the content of the novel, to give the reflections and to raise questions for whole class discussion. The order of the group presentations will be decided by lot drawing.
4. On the last five minutes before the course ends each week, I expect each of you to take out a small piece of paper and write down
● What is the main point of the course today?
● Any questions?
● Any suggestions or opinions?
It’s fine to hand in a blank piece of paper. But the more you feed back, the more you learn from this class!!

5. ORAL JOURNAL

To help enhance oral communication skills, one thing we can do in this course is to keep an oral journal. Following is a description of what it is and how it can work:
(1) An oral journal is simply a bound notebook (or a computer file, which is more likely to be the case nowadays) and what you are going to write in it should be more than a record of daily events. Try to include memories, self-reflections, reflections about the world, reactions and feelings about people or events happening at home or abroad.
(2) The best part about keeping an oral journal is that each time before you come to class you already have something written in your notebook (or on a printout), and then in class based on that you talk and share with your classmates.
(3) You see, that is why we call it ORAL JOURNAL: first you write about something and then you talk about it. Many people believe that this is a good way of overcoming or reducing the fear of speaking in a foreign language since you have time beforehand to practice and minimize problems that you might have with pronunciation or vocabulary.
(4) Write at least once every other week from the week of March 6th to that of May 29th for a total of six weeks (If you want to do more for possible extra credit, you are most welcome to do so simply by uploading the extra journals onto our course website along with the required six oral journals). At the end of the semester, you will need to hand in a hard copy of (a) two entries* which you think you would like to share with others most, and (b) a reaction report. There are several things you may want to consider to include in your reaction report. For example, (a) what you think about this activity in a general sense and whether you like it or not and in what ways, (b) whether or not you have personally benefited from doing this activity (give some specific examples), (c) how you think about working with your partners, and what kinds of problems you encounter in communicating with them, and (d) what you would suggest to do differently to make this activity better or more effective.
(5) Remember that each entry does not need to be long but try to make it as meaningful, reflective, and/or interesting as you possibly can.

*An entry is a piece of writing in your (oral) journal.
